Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space
In the beginning of the essay “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples, I identify with the white women. I identify with the white women because being a women makes her more sensitive and becoming a victim fast. I have always encountered the incidents with my family members to have a fear towards African Americans or even Latinos. When they are wondering in dark places it makes me feel that they are not the friendliest people. Seeing this as I grew up I came accustomed to staying away from certain places were I know I am going to encounter this event. I believe that the white women and I feel this way towards African Americans because of the stereotype about them. For example many people believe that African Americans are very violent and like to hurt people. Once I read the essay my identification of the black men change because I got see the other perspective of things. The men was just having a walk in the park and most importantly had no intensions on hurting the white women. This event makes me realize to not into jump conclusions about anyone. Everyone is different and should not have a negative image because of their race or gender.
